May Outing – The Glen

Dear RHGC Members,

Our delayed first outing of the 2021 season will take place on Friday 14th May at The Glen, North Berwick where we will be playing for the David Bryce Trophy. This will be a one round event with tee off times being from 1pm onwards.

The Glen is a spectacular and quality par 70 course for players of all ages and abilities. The course signature hole, the par 3 Sea Hole, nestles amongst the rocks and the beach in the shadow of the famous Bass Rock bird sanctuary. A memorable round reaches a stunning climax with a drive from an elevated 18th tee offering spectacular views of North Berwick, the Firth of Forth and its famous islands which include Fidra, the inspiration for Robert Louis Stephenson’s “Treasure Island”.

The Golf Club has been able to offer the following superb package to its members. The format for the day will be stroke play and this will also include a team competition.

Season Winners 2020

Congratulations go to Graeme Laurie and Daniel Welsh after winning the Club Championship and Hole and Hole competitions.

In the Club Championship played over Royal Musselburgh and Royal Burgess, Graeme defeated Jim Gordon 4 and 3 having been 2 up after 18 holes played at Royal Musselburgh.

In the Hole and Hole played over Duddingston and Haddington, Daniel defeated Robin Graham 2 and 1 having been 1 up at the halfway stage played at Duddingston.

That concludes our 2020 season and I have attached  a list of winners from the outings and competitions held…..congratulations go to all.

Please be on the lookout for any potential outings or deals that you may see for our 2021 season and contact either myself or one of the council members.

I’ll be in touch next year with news of the AGM or virtual AGM I imagine it will be together with hopefully news on our annual dinner and presentation of prizes.

Thanks to everyone who has managed along this season and hope to see you again next year.

Yearly Competition Update

This just about wraps up our season with the only outstanding competitions being the hole and hole final to be played between Daniel Welsh and Robin Graham, as well as the Club Championship Competition where Graeme Laurie awaits the winner of the semi-final to be played between Gordon Taylor and Jim Gordon. I’ll be in touch with the results of both as well as a list of all our winners for the season soon.

As this the last outing report can I thank Alan Gray for arranging Winterfield as well as thanks again to Graeme Laure, Alan Rees, Daniel Welsh, Jim Gordon and Duncan Rae in arranging outings via their home courses which ensured, that despite the challenges of lockdown, we still managed to fit in all of our 7 outings for the year.

I’d also like to say a special thanks to Brian Gillespie for on top of his monetary duties, helping to arrange things on the day and also in helping to round up the scorecards and sort out the scoring.

I’d also like to thank Duncan Rae who fortunately we managed to get back online just in time to help with the spreadsheets for the annual competitions.

It was fantastic to see such good numbers attending all of our outings and to see new members Esther, Val, Jim and Calum join us as well as welcoming back ‘old friends’ Stevie, Gordon, Derek, John and Jani along at some of the events.

Look forward to seeing you all again for the 2021 season and here’s hoping things can return to normal and most importantly clubhouses are open for a pre and post golf drink!

Outing Report – Winterfield

The curtain was brought down on our season with the 7th and final outing taking place on Friday 16th October with members competing for the Jim Meldrum Cup.

Given the time of the year conditions couldn’t have been much better and with light winds to be had some fine scores from the field of 20 including returning member Graeme Fraser were to be posted.

With access to the clubhouse being restricted the scorecards were collected and checked over the weekend with the winner on the day being Daniel Welsh with a fine score of 77 less 19 for a net 58. The runner up was Colin Mackie with a 69-8 for a net 61. Colin’s scratch 69 being bettered on the day by Thomas Grant who shot the best scratch score with a 68.

The team competition was won by Esther Jardine and Stevie Lugton with an excellent score of 51.

The ball nearest the holes winners were: – :

4th – Esther Jardine

9th – Jim Clark

11th – Dave Simpson

On the  14th no one managed to finish on the green

Richard Torrance posted the only 2 on the day on the 9th.

Many thanks to all who were able to attend some of our events this year and fingers crossed that things can return to normal next year with our next outing scheduled for early April 2021 at a venue TBA

Outing Report – Longniddry

The outings this year are coming thick and fast and our 6th outing was held at Longniddry Golf Club on Friday with members competing for the Keeper’s Tankard.

Given the deluge that was to fall the next day we were blessed with a perfect day for golf and the 16 players on show thoroughly enjoyed their day although from what I gather the greens were best described as being somewhat tricky.

It was also great to see Janahan back for an outing and in case any additional incentive was required on the day he kindly came supplied with 2 cases of beer for the winners.

In what has become an almost copy and paste report, Richard Torrance for the 3rd time in a row was the winner on the day with 34pts and winning on a better inward half score from runner up Brian Gillespie.

All joking aside this is a fantastic achievement to win 3 outings in a row and one for the historians to check if this has ever been done before.

The pair’s competition was won by Phil Millar and Jim Gordon with 44pts.

The ball nearest the holes winners were: – :

4th – Alan Gray

6th – Janahan Balasubrammaniam

13th – Janahan Balasubrammaniam

16th – Alan Gray

Janahan also converted both his putts to score the only 2’s on the day

Our final outing is being held at Winterfield on Friday 16th October.

Outing Report – Duddingston

The fifth outing of our delayed season was held at Duddingston Golf Club on Friday 25th September with members competing for the RHGC Quaich. This was originally scheduled to have been our June outing and the clubs thanks goes to local member Duncan Rae for helping to rearrange this.

Considering the time of year the course was found to be in great condition and all golfers thoroughly enjoyed their day.

After his success at Royal Burgess, Richard Torrance continued his rich vein of form and was the winner on the day with a stablefored score of 36pts. Richard winning courtesy of a better inward half score from runner up Phil Millar.

The team Tri-am competitions was won by Richard Torrance, Phil Millar and Dave Simpson.

The ball nearest the holes winners were: – :

2nd – Brian Gillespie

6th – Thomas Grant

10th – Norman Maclachlan

14th – Duncan Rae

All 4 nearest the hole winners converted their putts to post the fours 2’s scored on the day.

Nearest in 2 at the 18th was won by Dave Simpson

Our forthcoming outings are being held at Longniddry on Friday 2nd October and to round the season off at Winterfield on Friday 16th October.

Outing Report – Royal Burgess

Our prestigious fourth outing of the year was held at Royal Burgess Golf Club on Thursday 10th September with members competing for the Centenary Trophy.

The club was delighted to welcome new member Jim Clark along as well some familiar names in Gordon Duff, John Fanning, Jason Jeffrey and David Bryant. We were also pleased to welcome former Leven Golfing Society Captain Ninian Heron.

On a blustery day the course was found to be in wonderful condition and was a real pleasure to play.  Not everyone’s golf it has to be said was in wonderful condition but as the saying goes a bad days golf etc.

Former Captain Richard Torrance ended up our winner on the day with an impressive score of 80 less 13 for a net 67. The runner up on the day was Norman Baikie who shot an 80 less 11 for a net 69.  Richard and Norman’s 80 proved to be the best scratch scores on the day with Richard winning this on the better inward half score.

The team tri-am competition was won by Norman Baikie and John Fanning, playing in a pair due to late withdrawal they posted a fine score of 64.

The ball nearest the holes winners were: – :

5th – Jim Clark

8th- John Fanning

13th – Colin Mackie

Alan Gray recorded the only 2 on the day at the 8th.

Nearest in 2 at the 17th was won by Anthony Tan.

Our next outing will be held at Duddingston Golf Club on Friday 25th September and is a one round pm competition.

Outing Report – Haddington

Our third outing of the year was held at Haddington Golf Club on Friday 21st August with members competing for the Jubilee Vase.

On a blustery and showery day scoring proved difficult, no excuses could be made however when it came to the quality of the greens which members found to be in fantastic condition.

Graeme Laurie mastered the conditions best of all winning the outing with a score of 84 less 14 for a net 70. The runner up was Norman Maclachlan with a 77 less 6 for a net 71.   Norrie’s 77 also proved to be the best scratch score on the day.

The ball nearest the holes winners were: – :

4th – Norman Maclachlan

10th – Norman Maclachlan

Allan MacKinnon

A message from the club secretary:

Members will be saddened to learn of the death of long standing member Allan MacKinnon at the weekend.

Allan was a real gentleman and on or off the course was always terrific company.

A past Captain of the Club and Honorary President, Allan’s commitment to the golf club was incredible and in over 30 years of membership he played in close on 250 outings which is a remarkable achievement.

Allan really did have a lifetime of love for golf and our club and he will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him.

The golf club extends its condolences to all his family and friends at this sad time.
